Overview of a data base for greener yet efficient materials in multifamily affordable housing | Over the past year, the BlueGreen Alliance Foundation’s Clean Economy Manufacturing Center has researched and compiled detailed information on nearly 1,300 manufacturers who are making energy efficient products commonly used in the construction and retrofit of low-income residential and multifamily housing. Within their new database they assessed these products for location of manufacturing and for health criterial or reduce indoor air quality pollutants. | 1 | 1
Chemical Sensitivity and the new home construction process | Since the mid 1990’s, Green building professionals have focused on energy efficiency and global environmental concerns as the driving forces for consumer demands. However, consumers have become discouraged by the green standards because there is no focus on the health of the human occupant. Sick building syndrome, environmental illness, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity…These are real medical issues that families are facing because of the built environment they are surrounded with. With an enormous push into healthier eating, i.e.. gluten-free, low-carb, vegetarian, etc, consumers are now demanding a healthy HOME as well as a healthy body. Introduction to the Water Efficiency Rating Score Verification tool (WERS) | Similar to an energy score, a water score helps professionals and homeowners understand predicted water usage which is important for reducing utility costs of the home. It’s also essential to understand your project’s water impact because clean potable water globally is becoming a scarce resource and minimizing our use of water without sacrificing comfort or health is a goal for better homes. GHI is partnering with the Green Builder® Coalition to pilot a water performance score pathway for GreenStar that helps derive predicted water usage and saving for new and existing residential properties. Learn how to use an informed guidance tool based on local rainfall and water costs to measure and mitigate stormwater or catch valuable rainwater. | 1 | 1
Natural Building in Cold & Wet Climates | Building, remodeling or adding an addition to a home with natural materials in cold weather climates can be scary. Join us as we talk with Sigi Koko who is designing and building projects with strawbale and natural plaster to achieve healthy, durable, rot-free and very tight and energy efficient homes in cold wet climates. | 1 | 1
Reducing Occupant Exposure to EMFs in Residential Construction. | Because EMF exposure has potential links to headaches, ear and eye problems, memory problems, sleep disturbance (and the physical ailments that come from sleep deprivation), and cancer, we are using what is called the “precautionary principle”— if there is sufficient evidence that there could be harm from exposure to an influence and that exposure cannot be proven to be safe beyond a shadow of a doubt, then precautions need to be taken by the public to protect human exposure to that influence until safety can be firmly established. Electrically hypersensitive individuals, children, the elderly and the general public alike benefit when EMFs are reduced and eliminated. There is growing awareness of the importance of avoiding them. | 1 | 1 | Pending
Post Occupancy Study - LEED for Homes on Affordable Housing | Michigan State University (MSU) performed a Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) of 235 LEED-certified homes in the Midwest, and we are pleased to share the results. The goal is to identify the homes’ actual performance after people moved in, and also the benefits and shortcomings of the current LEED for Home certification system. | 2 | 2 | 2
