Navigating Indoor Air Quality Challenges While saving energy

We will explore the intersection of indoor air quality (IAQ) and green home building. While the green building movement is delivering on sustainability and energy efficiency, it often overlooks a critical component: the health of the home's occupants. Many green building initiatives inadvertently compromise IAQ, leading to environmentally friendly homes that are not necessarily healthy. Building codes need to catch up to modern technology. The idea that a home's square footage and number of bedrooms plus one somehow leads to proper ventilation to ensure breathable air needs to be updated, especially when modern software algorithms can instantly ascertain the Goldilocks scenario as to when and for how long fresh air rates are required. We will explore what IAQ is and the role that early intervention with pollutant source awareness can play in more innovative, more energy-efficient, healthy homes.

Managing Indoor Air Quality - Don't forget the "V" in HVAC

Several studies have shown that the air inside our homes and buildings is 5 - 7 times dirtier than the air outside. The Building Science industry has been tasked with improving indoor air quality. However, more training is needed, as this industry section is misunderstood and often neglected. This session will help attendees learn about some key IAQ issues, how to measure them, and how to effectively mitigate them to improve indoor air quality for building occupants.

Local Govt Leads The Way to Empowering Communities for Sustainable Living

Local governments can help lead the ways on transforming our housing stock to reduce energy bills, increase comfort, improve health and help us live a more sustianable lifestyle. Join us as we discuss two such successful programs that will inspire your community to take action. We will feature The Frederick Co MD Green Homes Challenge which helps homeowners "find actions within each of the challenges that apply to your household, and add them to your “Actions To Do List”. Once you complete the actions you will and earn points and you’ll be on your way to becoming a Certified Household!" Next we will feature the City of Holland’s ‘Home Energy 101’ education program, which partners with local non-profit agencies to deliver free home energy education for all Holland-area residents. After completing an in-home education visit, participants save an average of $200 on their combined utility bills, and show increased engagement with other rebate programs. Holland has also created a guide to help other communities launch similar programs in their own communities Join us to learn about these programs and how you can be inspired to create programs in your community to help people live, BETTER.

Solar Shingles That Pay For Themselves?

This course will describe how the energy landscape in the US is evolving and how residential solar is projected to be growing at a rapid rate over the next decade. With more homes installing Solar, the demand for products that are optimized for roof top installation is increasing resulting in next generation solar roofing products being developed and commercialized. This course is designed for roofing contractors, solar contractors, architects, builders, homeowners who are interested in learning more about solar technology with specific focus on solar shingles and how they compare to traditional solar panels.

Free Heat: Heating and cooling buildings entirely with ambient energy

Throughout history, buildings have been heated and cooled by ambient energy from the sun, air, ground and sky. Sun shining through windows makes nearly every building at least partially passive solar heated. Before mechanical air conditioning, ventilation and evaporative cooling were prevalent. Over the past century, a few pioneers pushed the technology to reach 100% ambient conditioning in several historic homes. Today, the science is available to reach this goal in buildings across the US. This course will discuss the balance of envelope losses, internal heat gains, solar gains and thermal mass that leads to 100% ambient conditioning. The effect of local weather will be compared. The target audience for this course are architects, engineers and homeowners who are motivated to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions, and increase resilience to power outages. Basic knowledge of passive solar heating and passive cooling is helpful, but not essential.
