Is a GREEN rater more specialized than a HERS rater? How are they different? Since a HERS (Home Energy Rating System) rater is already looking at the energy rating, aren’t they already evaluating how green a home is based on their energy efficiency? Or does a GREEN rater look at additional criteria to determine how eco-friendly a home is?

      Hello Robert

A Green Rater is a specific credential for the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED for Homes System (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). These raters over see the HERS raters work, and often times are the HERS rater themselves. They also verify and consult project teams who are building to the residential LEED standard. They verify areas such as insulation levels, indoor air quality, water usage, (recycled, low voc and locally produced) materials, waste management, innovation and project design and lastly, education and awareness of the project through the LEED program. Go to http://www.leedforhomes.org for more details. I highly recommend you contact your local provider in CA and see how you might get involved.
